Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? There’s a lot of good stuff to watch on Netflix. But there’s also a lot of good indie, not as well known movies on Netflix that deserve some praise too.

And so without further ado, this is my March 2017 listing of comedy / drama movies you can catch on Netflix Instant streaming this spring.

Best Netflix Movies That Don't Suck - Comedy and Drama

St. Vincent

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama St. Vincent

Why You Should Watch: This movie is hilarious, heartwarming, touching and well written. In short: this is one of the best movies I’ve watched in awhile. Bill Murray shines as Vincent, a Vietnam vet with a cynical disposition. Naomi Watts stars as his Russian friend who moonlights as a sex worker. He meets a young boy who moves in next door with his mom played by Melissa McCarthy and the story that unfolds is not one to be missed. Highly recommended.

Other People

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama Other People

Why You Should Watch: This movie is stunning. The plot revolves around a 29-year old gay man returns home to help care for his cancer-stricken mother, played by the always amazing Molly Shannon. As her illness progresses, we see the devastating – but not without hope and true heart – that cancer takes on a family. A true gem. I can’t hear “Drops of Jupiter” by Train without thinking of this movie. Beautiful.

Tallulah

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama Tallulah

Why You Should Watch: Tallulah, played by my favorite actress Ellen Page, shines in this Netflix Original movie. A vagrant and drifter, she finds herself thrown into a chaotic situation and makes a split-second decision that changes not only her own life but many others as well. This movie is so heartbreaking but so sweet and the acting is superb.

The Fundamentals of Caring

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama The Fundamentals of Caring

Why You Should Watch: Paul Rudd plays a man lost in his own life, looking for direction. He takes a job as a caregiver for a disabled young man, who’s just as lost as he is. Throw in a road trip, a sweet but misguided girl drifting through her life, and you’ve got one great story. This movie is definitely worth watching. Hilarious, witty and smart to boot.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Why You Should Watch: This is an “end of the world” movie with a twist: it’s funny, it’s smart, it’s sweet, and the characters are all too real. Steve Carrell stars as the main character trying to deal with his fate as a massive crater plummets toward the earth. He meets his sweet neighbor played by Keira Knightley, who turns out to be great company even in the darkest of days.

Mountain Men

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama Mountain Men

Why You Should Watch: I love this movie. Topher (played by Tyler Labine), a down and out stoner, and his estranged brother Cooper go on a trip to their long lost father’s old cabin in the mountains, they end up with more than they bargained for. But along the way, the rediscover each other and the brotherhood they’ve missed out on for years. Incredibly sweet, funny and charming, this movie made me laugh out loud.

Everything Must Go

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama Everything Must Go

Why You Should Watch: Will Ferrell plays a relapsed alcoholic who’s just lost his job, his wife, and his house. With nothing left to lose, and all his possessions on his lawn, he tries to sell off everything he has as he continues to drink away his pain. He meets a sweet neighborhood boy who helps him find his way back to reality and learns a lot of things along the way. So sweet and touching.

Waffle Street

Netflix Movie Comedy Drama Waffle Street

Why You Should Watch: I’ll warn you: this movie’s a bit cheesy. But it’s still sweet. A normal guy loses his job and decides he needs a change. The change he finds? He starts working at a low-level fast food joint, where he meets a variety of characters, including Danny Glover who plays the wise line cook. Sweet and funny.
