Happy Vernal Equinox!
Today marks the first official day of Spring. Hurrah! It’s been what feels like quite a long winter. I’m ready to get back into my garden & out with the camera. In keeping up with my Best Netflix Movie Reviews, I thought it were worth doing a Spring 2014 version of movies worth catching on Netflix as of late.
And as always, feel free to check out previous Best Netflix movie reviews, or leave a comment with suggestions or your thoughts on these movies.
Jeff Who Lives at Home
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Oh how I do love this movie. Dry humor, destiny, Susan Sarandon, Ed Helms, Jason Segel, bong smoking? It’s a bit slow in the beginning, but seriously, stick with this one. It’s sure not to disappoint.
It’s A Disaster
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This isn’t your typical ‘End of the World’ movie by any means. Instead of the usual focus on explosions, monsters etc., this movie is a tongue-in-cheek, dry humor sort of comedy with emphasis on the vast array of characters. Oh, & did i mention David Cross & Julia Stiles star? This one had me laughing out loud.
Our Idiot Brother
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: A cute little comedy, this movie has a lot of great stars in it, including the all-too-awesome Paul Rudd and Zooey Deschanel, among many others. This movie is sweet, lighthearted, and sure to make you laugh.
Friends With Kids
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Oh, I love you, Adam Scott. This movie, while a bit predictable possibly, quite sweet and similar to the previous movies listed, really has a strong emphasis on the characters in the movie. It’s sweet and funny without being too cheesy. And, yes, Adam Scott is in it, & he’s just darn nice to look at in my opinion.

Dark Horse
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This movie is, simply put, strange. But, if you like strange movies, this may be up your alley. Directed by the director of the more famous movie Welcome to the Dollhouse, Todd Solondz does not disappoint with this one. It’s on the same celestial plane as Dollhouse, and has a strange dark drama-comedy aspect to it. I totally dig this movie. Bonus: Christopher Walken stars!
Riding in Cars with Boys
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This is one of the more well known movies on this list. Gotta say, I love this movie and seen it several times over the years. Drew Barrymore & Brittany Murphy (RIP.. I loved her) are so awesome in this movie, and I love the way the storyline is laid out. It’s funny, sweet, sad- what more could you ask for?
Year of the Dog
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This is another dry comedy starring Molly Shannon, which I find to be super funny. It may be funnier to me considering all the parallels in my own life, which should probably be mentioned. It’s funny and sweet and chalked full of cute ass dogs, which hey, that’s one of my favorite things ever kind of.
Jackie Brown
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: If you haven’t seen this epic Tarantino film, you are seriously missing out. There’s really too many reasons to list: Pam Grier is a bad ass, Samuel L. Jackson & Robert DeNiro star, there are guns & heists & violence- did I mention it’s Tarantino?! Check this one out if you haven’t seen it before, seriously.
Hello Lonesome
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: I can’t even put into words how much I like this movie: it’s stellar. The film follows a series of characters all caught up in their own different experiences, quirks, and tribulations in life. There’s a lot of humor, and I feel this movie really brings a new light to what it means to be human, and the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone once and awhile to meet people you’d otherwise never think you could identify with. This is one of my favorites on this list and I could probably watch it five more times before getting almost all the underlying details. Directed by Adam Reid, you should watch it.
Sleepwalk With Me
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This movie, thought not very well known at all, is really funny and stars comedian Mike Birbiglia as the main character. A lot of this movie focuses on human relationships and how crazy they are. Also, as the title suggests, he has issues with sleepwalking, which leads to some pretty funny dream scenes. Worth the watch.
As Good As It Gets
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: I think this one pretty much goes without saying. I mean, JACK NICHOLSON. Also: cute dog, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear- this movie is just obviously awesome all the way over & if you haven’t seen it yet, you really should. So hilarious, hilarious, hilarious.
A Little Help
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Jenna Fischer, most popularly known as Pam in The Office, is a great actress. This movie is cute and the humor is pretty dry. Her character’s so cute in this movie, too- she’s so neurotic & weird, she makes me feel normal. The kid who plays her son is cute too- really funny stuff here.

Prince Avalanche
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This is the second Paul Rudd movie in this list, and let me start by saying this one’s a lot different than Our Idiot Brother. It’s- strange, it’s kind, it’s- I don’t know. The friendship between the main characters, Rudd & Emile Hirsch, is absurd and adorable. Not to mention, it has an amazing soundtrack. Low-key and worth the watch.
The Details
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This movie is, like a lot of these on here, weird & downright strange. BUT- that said, it’s also pretty great in that it stars a lot of great actors, has some pretty awesome characters, and this main character is so messed up, he’ll make you feel like a better person.
One Week
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This is kind of a sad movie, partially, but overall I really enjoyed it. Basically a young man finds out he has cancer and in turn, buys a motorcycle and sets out across the country (set in Canada) to trek his way across until he gets to the ocean. Beautiful scenery and well written overall, I enjoyed this movie. Not to mention, it really made me want to take a trip to Canada.

The Virgin Suicides
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This is a classic. I’ve loved this movie for a long time, and it stars a lot of great actors/actresses. A lot of beautiful cinematography as well. It’s strange, but it’s pretty great. It follows the book it’s based on very closely, which lends itself to the impeccable narration throughout the film.
Blue Valentine
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Feel like being depressed? Never wanting to marry? Well then this may be the movie for you. It’s sad. But it’s cinematography is pretty beautiful. Not to mention, Ryan Gosling stars, so there’s always that. Overall, a good movie to watch if you don’t mind feeling a bit down.
The Other Woman
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Good acting, overall, a sad story mostly. Could also be titled, Reasons Not To Date Married Men. Natalie Portman is a great actress.
