Beware irony, ignore criticism, look to what is simple, study the small and humble things of the world, do what is difficult precisely because it is difficult, do not search for answers but rather love the questions, do not run away from sadness or depression for these might be the very conditions necessary to your work. Seek solitude, above all seek solitude.

— Sigrid Nunez, The Friend

We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?

— Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

And that was the point of children, thought Caroline Middey: to bind us to the earth and to the present, to distract us from death. A distraction dressed as a blessing: but dressed so well, and so truly, that it became a blessing.

— Amanda Coplin, The Orchardist

In times of grief and sorrow I will hold you and rock you and take your grief and make it my own. When you cry I cry and when you hurt I hurt. And together we will try to hold back the floods to tears and despair and make it through the potholed street of life.

— Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook

The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.

— Marcus Tullius Cicero

It takes but one person, one moment, one conviction, to start a ripple of change.

— Donna Brazile

He hadn’t drawn the best of cards, but he’d played his hand darned well, so what was there to grieve over?

— Jeannette Walls, Half Broke Horses

He was now in that state of fire that she loved. She wanted to be burnt.

— Anaïs Nin, Delta of Venus

Grief is like a drunken houseguest, always coming back for one more goodbye hug.

— Stephen King, Bag of Bones

Nothing is more repugnant, nothing less edifying than such squabbles; people after all are brothers, in spite of all denominational differences.

— King Ludwig II of Bavaria

How rude of the dead to die. How selfish. Wherever they are, no pain, in eternal darkness or wondrous afterlife. And here we are, tears streaming down our cheeks, the knotted stomach and clammy palms, a feeling akin to falling, in a dream that won’t end.

— John Kenney, I See You’ve Called in Dead

The wisest thing to do if you're living in hell is to make yourself comfortable.

— Charles Bukowski

Ellen was dead and perhaps death gave an understanding of all things.

— Margaret Mitchell, Gone With the Wind

What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.

— Albert Pike

But I'll see you in the sky above,
in the tall grass, in the ones I love,
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

— Bob Dylan, You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go

Look at the sun sinkin' like a ship
Ain't that just like my heart babe,
When i kiss your lips?

— Bob Dylan, Meet Me In The Morning

I was an agnostic. Agnostics didn’t have much to argue about.

— Charles Bukowski, Ham On Rye

Blessed is the influence of one true, loving human soul on another.

— George Eliot

I don’t want him to see me cry. I need to get home. I need to be alone, to lick my wounds and be still until the world stops spinning and settles on this new reality. Maybe with some time I’ll be okay. For the first time in my life, I can’t see how.

— Kerry Anne King, Closer Home

Oh, my name it means nothing and my age it means less.
The country I come from is called the midwest...

— Bob Dylan, With God on Our Side

Don’t look back! But she swiftly disregarded it, swept forward on a tide of happiness. At last she was understanding him, at last their minds had met. This moment was too precious to be lost, no matter what pain came after.

— Margaret Mitchell, Gone With the Wind

But now I'm confused. Is this death really you?
And do these dreams have any meaning?
No. No, I think it's more like a ghost that's been following us both.
Something vague that we're not seeing,
Something more like a feeling.

— Bright Eyes, Something Vague

If you have two friends in your lifetime, you're lucky. If you have one good friend, you're more than lucky.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

— George Eliot

It’s what you do when you’ve experienced the worst of the worst. You seek out people like you…people worse off than you…and you use them to make yourself feel better about the terrible things that have happened to you.

— Colleen Hoover, Verity

He’d been an old man when last I saw him, and was played out even further now. But an old wolf is still a wolf.

waiting to die.

And as much as I’d like to believe there’s a truth beyond illusion, I’ve come to believe that there’s no truth beyond illusion. Because, between ‘reality’ on the one hand, and the point where the mind strikes reality, there’s a middle zone, a rainbow edge where beauty comes into being, where two very different surfaces mingle and blur to provide what life does not: and this is the space where all art exists, and all magic.

— Donna Tartt, The Goldfinch

You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There’s still lots of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don’t think he knows.

Time only seems to have skipped, or to have sped by without you when you looked the other way.

— Arthur Schopenhauer

I was alone again, I always felt better being alone. When you’re alone, the only problem is yourself. It’s nicer that way. You stay out of trouble.

— Charles Bukowski

Any rose can succumb to rot, given the right conditions. But, with enough attention, it can come back better than before.

— K.A. Tucker, Be The Girl

Life swings like a pendulum backward and forward between pain and boredom.
