If you read a lot of blogs, you may have come across a trend I’ve noticed spring up on some of them over the past few years… features called “What I Wore”. In a nutshell, some of my fellow lady bloggers have jumped on the bandwagon where, essentially they post photos of themselves in the outfits that they wore that day, usually accompanied by Brand names and prices of the clothes they’re modeling, and sometimes links to these brands as well.
Over my years of blogging, I too have entertained the idea. I mean, all self-mocking jokes aside, I like to think that I have some style- a style all my own, if you want to get right down to it. One day I’ll be wearing cowboy boots and a Johnny Cash t-shirt, the next you could find me in a posh, form fitting Express dress. However: many of these blogs mentioned in the first paragraph are namely populated with POPULAR brands. You know- stuff cool people wear. And, well, being a woman web designer in a man’s field- hey man, I’ve got a mortgage! I rarely buy new clothing. In fact, I like to think of myself as something of a thrift store hunter. Have been for years.
So, i got to thinking. Maybe I don’t have a brand new American Apparel shirt to sport, topped off with some super expensive heels- but hey, I’VE STILL GOT STYLE. I hold strong on to my frugal ways; always hunting for the best deal. The thing about thrift store shopping, especially for clothes, is that it’s kind of an adventure in itself. You never know what you’ll find, and it’s still a nice idea to me that one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure. In fact, I’ve proved it over and over again- I have a clothing collection that I’m almost embarrassed of, as I like to think of myself as a non-consumerist, almost tomboy-esque type of chick. All of this being said: I’m starting a new feature here on Rant; and yeah, it’s “What I Wore” but also, nearly all of these pieces of apparel have been found at a thrift store. C’mon, I know I’m not the ONLY one who can’t afford an arm & a leg for some radical clothes. So instead of titling this What I Wore, I’m going with Second Hand Style. Because hey, it’s green. And that’s cool, right?
